One of my personal goals this year was to give back to the local community. I wanted to pick something that the whole family can take part in. Yesterday, while my youngest and I were going through her book library, we realized that we had a stack of books which she outgrew. Instead of giving them to my friends and family, I thought that we can do something more. And I knew that I didn’t want to recycle them to a consignment shop either. I searched through the internet and happily found an amazing organization called Reach Out And Read (ROR).
Their mission is to donate new and/or used books to underprivileged pediatric clinics throughout the US and promote early literacy. Volunteers have the option to read to the children in the waiting rooms. If I had more time, I definitely hope to participate whenever I can in the future.
The girls and I are thrilled to give our books to children who can use them and love them like we have.
We are in the process of getting everything organized and ready to deliver to our nearest site. I have contacted the ROR NJ center and awaiting their response. We hope to send our books over to St. Joseph’s Hospital in Paterson, New Jersey and Preakness Pediatrics in Wayne, New Jersey. If you would like to find a program near you, click here. And if you are interested in helping out in other ways, please visit their site.
Now as part of the Picture Book Pass It On (#PBPiO) initiative which was created by children’s book author, Michelle Eastman, (1) I pledge to pass on my books to these underprivileged children. (2) Below is the PBPiO Badge and it’s now added to my sidebar for anyone interested in participating for a good cause. I do not have Facebook (I know, I know 😳) so I hope those who do have it will pass it on and spread the love.
Here is an excerpt from Michelle’s blog explaining the details:
I hope you will join me by accepting 3 calls to action:
#1 Pledge to donate a new or gently used picture book/s to a children’s charity in your area.
#3 Pass it on. When you post about your pledge, challenge one or more friends to join your #PBPiO giving chain. Encourage them to take the pledge and keep passing it on…
Let’s help to promote early literacy from all over the world!
