#BallTalk No. 2: What Is Chin Music?

No. 2

Chin music: an inside pitch close to a batter’s chin. (If the ball comes any closer, the batter might be singing a different tune.) A shave. A pitcher who throws a lot of chin music is called a barber. NY Giants pitcher Sal Maglie was know as “The Barber” because he threw so many high inside pitches.

Sal The Barber pitched from 1945 to 1958.

I love this illustration! That mustache on the baseball is genius! And a good reason to have a face guard on your helmet for the kiddos. 😉

*please note that this is an excerpt from a page in the “How To Speak Baseball: An Illustrated Guide To Ballpark Banter” book.
