“no harm will overtake you, no disaster will come near your tent. For he will command his angels concerning you to guard you in all your ways; they will lift you up in their hands, so that you will not strike your foot against a stone.” – Psalm 91:10-12
In the year 1980, my family immigrated to Astoria, New York from Buenos Aires, Argentina. My brothers and I were born there. And it was a huge adjustment for a 5 year old who had to learn a new language and a new culture.
Well, one afternoon my grandmother was a little late in picking me up from Kindergarten. I am guessing because of the communication issue, I didn’t ask my teacher for help but rather told myself to go visit my parents at work in Brooklyn. I knew how to ride the subway trains due to our frequent trips to see them… thanks to Grandma! So I left my school and walked a few blocks to the subway station. With my backpack in tow, I went under the turnstile and proceeded to the train platform.
Now, the New York City Subway system (1980 map shown above) is quite complicated. Some adults have trouble comprehending it. So how did a 5 year old little girl take the GG train from Steinway St. (surprisingly on the right platform), transferred to the LL train at Metropolitan Av./Grand St. (on the right platform again), and then transferred to the M train to Knickerbocker Av. (AGAIN on the right platform)? That’s three trains! From there, I walked a few more blocks to my parents’ work. My mother was in tears when I showed up in one piece.
I remember this day like it was yesterday. I was very naive and completely fearless. I can’t imagine what I would do if my kids pulled something like that.
My guardian angel was watching over me. How did I manage this commute without getting lost, kidnapped, injured, etc.? It still amazes me. It still amazes my parents.
But times have changed. We have Siri, Google Maps, GPS, and so on. We have better security protocol and people are more aware of their surroundings. People are more willing to help. Well, most people are, at the very least.
Ironically, the Feast of Guardian Angels was celebrated on October 2, 2014. My story is only one of many out there. So do you believe that guardian angels are watching over you at all times? I know that I do.
